What is Medicare Part D?

Medicare Part D is the prescription drug benefit part of Medicare. Part D plans help you lower the cost of your prescription drugs, like those you take to manage a chronic condition.

If you are eligible, enrolling in a Part D plan is optional. But you may want to consider joining a Part D plan even if you don’t currently take any medications to avoid the late enrollment penalty. If you are eligible for Medicare Part D but go 63 days or longer without creditable prescription drug coverage, you have to pay a monthly fee, called a late enrollment penalty.

How to choose the right Part D plan for you

We understand it’s important to choose a plan that fits your unique health and medication needs. Here are three tips to help you choose the right Part D plan for you:

  1. Review the plan’s drug formulary to check that the medications you take are covered: Also consider which drug tier your prescriptions fall under. The drug tier will affect your copay.

  2. Review the plan’s pharmacy list to make sure your preferred pharmacy is in network: You can also explore options like home delivery services if you need help getting your prescriptions.

  3. Review and compare plan costs: Evaluate the plan’s premium, deductible and typical copays. A plan with a lower premium may have a higher copay each time you fill your prescription. Decide the right balance between what you can pay monthly and what you can pay out of pocket.

What is a Medicare Part D plan?

You can get a Part D plan through private insurers, like HealthSpring. These plans are offered as a standalone plan, known as a prescription drug plan (PDP), or as a Medicare Advantage plan with prescription drug coverage, known as MA-PD. If you enroll in a standalone PDP, you can also have original Medicare (Parts A and/or B), and a Medicare Supplement plan (Medigap). If you enroll in a MA-PD plan, it’s an all-in-one coverage with medical, hospital and drug coverage. Some MA-PD plans offer extra benefits, like dental, vision, and hearing. It’s important to understand that you cannot have both a PDP and MA-PD plan at the same time, so you’ll want to choose the one that best fits your lifestyle.

We can help you choose the right prescription drug coverage option that meets your needs and your budget. Enter your zip code to view plans in your area.
